It's thursday...

And I'm not being thankful. Awful I know. Not because I don't have anything to be thankful for, but my brain just isn't up to. Nope. I'm exhausted. Tomorrow's Friday, which means NO class:o) Work @1230! BUT...baby checkup @ 9am. Seriously. Who made THAT appointment? Me? ME?! WTF was I thinking.

Anywho...tonight I'm stripping diapers. As Autumn's Aunt Becky put it so lovely, "her diapers stink and are leaking" which means...time to strip! And man, I must be using too much detergent b/c I'm stripping her "clean" diapers and there's only about 4 of them right now. And I'm on my THIRD cycle of hot wash and there's still so many suds. Crap. And then I still have to wash the rest of her diapers and then strip those. What a long night I have ahead. ^*#^O#&%^#&$^*^(*&%(&^%

Yea.

In other news...my baby girl is 7 months today! I have an update to do, I know. She's getting so big and I love her smiles and her playfulness and her attitude (oh yea, she has one!) and just everything about her. Where does the time go?

FIRST WORD!

Autumn said her first word - MAMA! And Shawn heard it, too:o) It made me SO HAPPY!!!! Our little girl is growing up!

My Pasta Theory

Autumn is obviously not on food yet, BUT I mentioned to my bff that I have a theory on why most children love pasta of any form. Pasta requires less chewing. Really. Think about it! Spaghetti, mac & cheese, shells, raviolis, etc. All a LOT less work than say, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or chicken nuggets! It may not be that they necessarily like pasta better (although, it could be that b/c pasta in all forms is just awesomeness anyway), but if they have to chew less, it means their mouths are less tired from eating, which means they will eat more!

I'm a genuis. I know. I really must write & publish my own book:oP

Cloth Diapers Reviews

Cloth diapering is going excellent for us! It's not nearly as hard as people make it out to be (those who refuse to even consider it) and doing some extra laundry is really not the biggest inconvenience (doing our regular laundry is more inconvenient because I'm actually required to fold, put away and hang that stuff! diapers just get thrown in the drawer!)

Also...I know this is everywhere on the internet, but from personal experience I am telling you that the SUN WORKS MIRACLES ON STAINS! Holy cows and horses I could not believe what an hour in the sun could do for stains! People told me that breastfed babies didn't stain the diapers. It's a lie. Or I have crummy detergent. Either way...SUN = Cleanliness. (Hm..."cleanliness is next to godliness"....is this why the sun was ancient civilazations main god? because it got their diapers super clean? COULD BE!)

Anywho...here's my reviews are some diaper products thus far:

Kissaluvs Size 0 - most recommended diaper for newborns by far, so they tell me. Supposedly fit 5-15 lb babies. My child was born 9 lbs and reached 10 lbs before 1 month. Since day one use of these diapers her little thighs were being squished:o( And she's not a chunky baby! (at least I don't think so) Do I like them? Sure! They are VERY absorbent and we had no leaks...even with some icky poops! They fit her waist fine, but they are just too tight around her legs. My husband really didn't like using them because he thinks they made her uncomfortable - while I think she actually could care less, it did look uncomfy when taking a diaper off her, so I finally gave in and packed them away a few days before she even officially turned one month:o/ I will keep them for the next child, though I am trying to sell off some of the more worn out ones that I purchased for the "emergency" stash, since we never used as many as I thought we might.

Prorap Covers - sucked. I bought 3 used, really cheap. The elastic and velcro was fine. I don't know if their waterproofing abilities go out the window after awhile or what, but we had leaks EVERY TIME I used these covers with her Kissas. I would make sure to wrap the elastic around her legs and snug under the diaper and I still got leaks. The cover themselves actually got soaked around the elastic leading to the transfer of leakage onto her clothes. I had to change her just about every time she had a wet diaper. It sucked.

MothersEase Covers - LOVE! I decided to try these with the Kissas since the Proraps weren't doing the job. Haven't had a single leak. And because they have several size adjustments with snaps I used them with the Kissas, the MothersEase Sandy (XS) and I can still use them for the S size, too!

MothersEase/Sandys (XS) - I am tempted to say that I like these better than the Kissas. Their fit is nicer - more square...if that makes sense? They don't hug the thighs as tight and the fit around the waist is more even. However, the Kissas have a button down the center for when the cord hasn't fallen off yet and the MothersEase don't. Also (I hope I can explain this), but when you snap the Kissas you bring the snaps towards you which seems more natural. MothersEase diapers snap away from you, making coordination with a squirmy baby a little harder. They only fit 6-12 lbs, which means they fit for just about the same amount of time as the Kissas:o( Overall, though, for newborn diapers I really liked them...perhaps more, if not right on par with the Kissas.

MothersEase/Sandys (S) - These fit 8-20 lbs! Obviously these could have fit Autumn right away, but the XS ones are for the nicer fit as newborns, so I thought these would be too loose on her at first. Now that we're moving up in size these fit awesome. Again - the snaps are annoying because they snap away from you, not towards you. But I have NO leaks thus far. They work awesome with the matching covers. And she seems very comfortable!

Kushies - I didn't buy these - they were given as a gift ordered from Babies R Us. They came in a 5-pack (I received two). I LOVE THEM! They are all-in-ones, so they have the waterproof cover already. They're velcro = "dad-friendly" and quicker changes. They have an extra liner inside (con: it isn't removeable, so it will always be a little bulkier than other diapers), but it is SO absorbent and I've had no leaks. Also, it fits from 10-22 lbs, so it's awesome for this "in between" stage Autumn is going through. All my other AIOs don't start until 14 lbs. They take a little longer to dry, but that's because the cover is attached, so it's expected.

Cloth wipes - have not used them on her. I need to get a spray bottle and some "bits" for a cleaner. I HAVE used them as breast pads though:o) When I've run out of my disposables and haven't had time to run to the store, I've used them and they're pretty absorbent! They're multi-tasking products!

The first casualty:o(

How do you explain, "This is for the BABY, but not you-baby, the BABY-BABY!?!?!"

So I came home yesterday & my loving hsuband asks, "What was that duck thing?" And I immediately know what he's talking about. "It's a duck rattle." His response, "Well..." It seems Jynx got to it and he had thrown it somewhere, so I didn't find it until this morning to see what the damage was. Luckily it just needs to be washed. No rips. All seams in tact. Eyes are firmly attached. I mean even the tags from when I bought it are still there!!! She must've brought it out to the porch immediately to show Daddy before trying to tear it up, so it was caught pretty early. What's even more interesting...I had actually placed it in the bin where I'm keeping the baby books & toys, which meant she had to go into the room and look into the bin and take it out. Smart dog. Pain in the ass dog. But smart dog.

On the other hand, she's stupid. And I can't be too mad at her. The only toys we've really ever had in the house have been for the dogs. She doesn't know there's a baby on the way, so she can't understand the concept of "a toy for a child to come, but not yet here." It' a toy - it's meant to be played with. Also, the nursery used to be her room, so she still goes in there to lay down and she has been so confused about what we're doing to it. Poor Jynx. It really is like having another child who is too young to understand a "new baby" in the family. Jazz gets it - she's been great. She's a VERY SMARY dog. But my baby Jynx is my baby and she requires a learning curve in this department.

Here's the duck. It has now met the full acquaintance of Jynx. Been loved adn slobbered on by a pup. And now it will be fully prepared to be loved & slobbered on by a baby. (after being washed of course)

And here is Jynx being talked to about the differences between "baby toys" and "Jynx toys." She didn't get yelled at, but we need to start showing her what is hers and what is not hers. Oh brother...

Autumn's Room

Autumn's room is coming along VERY nicely! It's a very small room with a lot of furniture, but I think we've done an excellent job so far keeping it open in order to move around and be accessible. These are pictures taken with my laptop camera, so some didn't come out as well as I had hoped. Still to come...pictures of the dresser, wardrobe, & changing table.

Ta-da! Her name! YAY! The letters were a shower gift from my boss & good friend. They were white when we got them & then after a trip to Michael's they've been handpainted with a lot of thought behind their design.

This is her crib bedding. Actually, the set comes with black & white crib sheets, but we decided to accent the bedding with red sheets instead.

Her window treatments. The valance matches the crib set. The black rod came from Kmart. The black curtains from Walmart. And the sconces we've had around the house for years and were originally off-white. Shawn painted them red w/ black accents (sorry there isn't better detail to show).

Light switch cover & outlet covers. 100% my husband's idea. I'm glad we're creative together - it's made decorating her room so much fun!

Her closet door knobs. Painted red w/ NJ Devils (NHL in case you didn't know) logo stockers attached. Whose genius idea could that have been?!

That is a picture of Martin Brodeur above my child's crib. Please note: it is BELOW the Cross because we cannot be committing sacrilege in this house:o) Yes, I agreed to this. Because sometimes you have to pick & choose your battles and, honestly, it's kind of cute how Shawn is putting his own thought into all of this.

The sitting area! The hamper & the bin (which will be used for books & toys) match the crib set also. The rocking chair & ottoman were from Craigslist and obviously do NOT match. The upholstery on both is blue with red flowers...hence the red throw over the chair. But this is the MOST COMFY rocking chair ever & I had to get it!

Wall art! This is hardly all of it - I'm still waiting on a few pieces. On the ride side is the wall beside the closet. The picture frames were a set that - again - match the crib bedding. The puzzle mirrors I adore! I think mirrors are great for little kids to look into and make observations and the puzzle theme is just really cute! We might get two more to add to the wall!
On the left is the entrance to her room. The NJ Devils flag was added by, guess who? He wanted to hang it somewhere more prominent in the room and I absolutely refused! This was a compromise - when the door is open it's actually behind the door, so you only see the edges.

CD CRAZY!

I think I'm ALMOST good on cloth diaper stuff:o)

Tomorrow I'm picking up 9 FREE Kissas - supposedly they aren't in the best shape, but they're free, so who cares? They'll be handy if I need backups for emergencies or something.

I'm also picking up some Mother-ease which will fit during the NB stage and some time afterwards during her "medium" phase, along w/ 2 wraps to go with the diapers.

And I ordered 5 more medium AIOs from Etsy! I love this one shop - the diapers are really cute & get GREAT reviews.

And I got a good amount of cloth wipes for pretty cheap & free shipping off another Etsy store.

AND I ordered our wetbags (travel bags for dirty diapers).

All I have left is to order 2 pail liners & Bac-Out & I think I'll hold off on purchasing anything else. Overall, between Craigslist, sales & second-hand stuff I've saved us over $350 from buying stuff at full-cost! I'm proud of myself!

OH MY!

We have SO MUCH STUFF! Yesterday's shower was awesome. I ate some yummy food (I love Debbie's meatballs!) and got to hang out with friends and family that I don't get to spend much time with. And my CAKE was the coolest! EVER! I can't wait to post pics! Oh, and I willingly shared the spotlight with Caleb because he's such a cutie pie, so who couldn't resist just loving on him?! Of course...he was definitely trying to put Autumn in her place and let her know who the big kid in town was as he bopped up and down on my belly, but I didn't mind...it will just make her a tough girl!

Shawn was right - I came home with more STUFF! STUFF GALORE! I came home with boxes and bags of all sorts of wonderful things, along with my leftover cake and leftover snack food. I spent the rest of the evening unpacking everything. I do not believe in stacking things away in boxes until they'll be used. Time goes by so fast when kids are little that you use things before you know it, so you might as well get it unpacked and put where it belongs from the very start! There is now some organization in the nursery. Today I'm washing all the baby blankets & newborn/0-3 clothes to get us started. I can't put her crib together 100% until I get my crib sheets, which have been purchased off my registry, but I haven't received yet. I CAN put together the bassinet since I went out and bought the new bassinet mattress & sheet today. I need to wash it all though. I also plan on sterlizing all the bottles, utensils, snack traps and other feeding-related items today. I put together her new bouncer, which is soft and snuggly! I put together the strollers. There is a pile o'stuff that is designated for our cars when the cars get cleaned out. Boxes are piled high in the living room, but they're being taken away by friends who are in the process of moving (so convenient!).

And that's that. I got laundry detergent for the baby clothes & cloth diapers (which I also might brave sometimes today). I ran to Babies R Us to use a gift card and purchased a good chunk of items I needed.

This week: finish purchasing registry items & other necessities, stock up on food & other grocery items for the first few weeks of baby's arrival, make some freezer foods, purchase shower gifts for my wonderful sister-in-law and my bestest friend ever, do thank you notes, and try to manage some rest somewhere in the mix of things!

And from Autumn...

BEARY CHRISTMAS!

i LOVE this onesie. It came in one of the tons of bags of clothes I got from a friend. Her daughter just turned one in early Dec, so Autumn will fit a lot of the same clothing. Unfortunately, Autumn won't be here in time for Christmas (which is a good thing!), but she'll definitely be too big for this next year. SO...I decided to dress Autumn while still in-the-womb. I think she looks awesome, don't you?! She's made this year so special for us and our friends and family and we're so lucky to have such a wonderful blessing in our lives!

When a man ain't around...

Things can still be accomplished. Are they installed correctly? No. Will they ever tumble out and bonk Autumn on the head? Unlikely. Do they look nicer than a closet full of crap? YES! Therefore, it's awesomeness all around!!!

As of last week they weren't even completely painted. One still only has one coat, but I'm lazy, I can't tell the difference, and it's good enough to make me smile - so we'll call it "done." I need a nail gun to install the handles and I don't know where hubby's is, so it'll have to wait til he gets home. I know there will probably be some criticism because it isn't perfect, but it's the first time this closet has had doors since we moved in - 3 years ago! So...I don't care what anyone says. I'm happy!!!!!

Pre-Nesting & Feeling Blessed

As OCD as I am, this pre-nesting was NOT my idea! Actually, Shawn decided since he was home this week to start cleaning out the porch closet that was intensely packed full of stuff. The result thus far: just about everything is out of the closet, several garbage bags have been filled, some new storage crates have emerged and the porch is "organized" into areas that only he can possibly decipher. I am so glad he's taken the initiative to get it done, especially because his reasoning behind it all is to make more room for all of the stuff we will acquire when our baby girl comes along. What a thoughtful Daddy! Along with the porch we also tackled some of the kitchen today. The fridge & freezer have been cleaned inside and out, old stuff have been tossed and room has been made for all the venison he is hoping to add this hunting season!!! I cleaned the outside of the dishwasher and most of the bottom cabinets. I also finally got around to hitting the "self clean" button on the oven. You would think since it's just a button and I haven't used the stove in a week anyway that it wouldn't require that much effort to get it done, BUT my brain has been elsewhere when I'm home and I only think of it when I'm out of the house. So...it's finally getting done.

As for feeling blessed...our house is being FILLED with baby stuff. Already the office has an entire corner that is slowly creeping toward the center of the room with baby stuff. And now the living room is home to a Graco swing, from neighbor's and good friends down the street, and a practically brand new Evenflo Aura stroller, from the same friends' mother. And she doesn't even KNOW us that well (yea, I know, thank you card MUST be written!). Seriously, we have such giving friends and family. We've acquired or have been offered so much stuff that I feel so blessed to know so many wonderful people. Thank you to everyone who has offered to help us in so many ways! We appreciate everything you do for us and we are so grateful!!!!

Cloth Diapers INDEED!

Just an update on how the CD diaper stock-up is going. We have 20 Kissaluvs size 0 for the newborn stage. Only 2 of which I bought brand spankin' new...the rest came from either Craigslist or women from The Bump. AND I have two one-size diapers. Oh, and a few cloth wipes that someone threw in for free:o)

I LOVE SAVING $$$$

First Birthing Center Appointment

So on Tuesday I made the big announcement to the world of our pregnancy and mentioned that we had our first appointment at the birthing center, but I didn't go into great detail.

Can I just tell you that I can't take my husband anywhere?! Actually, I think most of the women we saw in the office that day just thought he was hysterical - we certainly won't be forgotten by any of them anytime soon! I wouldn't be surprised if they went home or out for dinner that night and discussed him over drinks. When we walked in he immediately struck up a fun conversation with one receptionist while I got checked in and filled out paperwork. It certainly wasn't quiet like a doctor's office, either. There was another couple there with their newborn and toddler-age little girl who was just talking and playing around, and all the staff were just "chat chat chat." It was nice not to be in a "silent" environment.

The lab technician was funny, too. Very sweet. "T." I like her and look forward to seeing her at our other visits. I've actually gone up a pound or two to about 135-136, but that's still in my normal range, so it's like I've barely gained weight. I think I'll start counting pounds once I hit 140, since that's usually my highest weight in any given year. We got a packet of information and a new book to read and they took our picture together, so they can remember each couple - which I thought was very personal!

Then we were led to an office. I'm not sure if she was one of the midwives or one of the RNs, I wasn't paying attention. She seemed...stiff. I didn't not-like her, but she didn't seem to have a sense of humor like the other; maybe Shawn just overwhelmed her with his fun attitude. She did look at him kind of weird. We'll call her "J." Luckily, we weren't with her our visit; she asked if a student midwife could come in and do the whole appointment, which we agreed to because we're all about helping others out and it wasn't a big deal to us. So, we met "H" and she was COOL! I WISH she actually worked there because I would love it if it were possible she could be at the birth, but alas, she is just a student.

We spent a good 40 minutes going over family history, what's offered at the center, what can be offered thru the hospital down the road, and all the genetic testing that is available to us. I think there was more joking around than work getting done - we must have gone well over our time limit.

Then we got down to the nitty-gritty. They did a breast exam and everything looked normal, which is something I keep a look out for often since breast cancer runs in the family. Then they checked the size of my uterus, which is about the size of a grapefruit - right on schedule for being 12 weeks along. And then we got to hear the heartbeat - the ONLY reason they say anyone ever goes to an appointment:o) They actually told me, "It's still early, so we may not be able to hear it yet with the dopplar." Guess what?! They stuck that thing on me and in 2 seconds flat we heard the baby! That's what I call STRONG! 140bpm and going strong:o)

Shawn was just giggling in his sit while I laid there with an ear to ear grin. So all is well and I'm a happy mommy with a healthy baby and our next appointment is on August 21!

OH - I almost forgot - the boutique across the hall! Can I just tell you that I think men should be offered a baby-product class!!! We walked through the small boutique and Shawn just couldn't keep his hands off stuff - asking what it was, saying "this sounds cool, let's get it!" when it really wasn't something I needed. It was unbelievably adorable and funny! Daddies are so cute!

Cloth Diapers:O)

So, since I'm always one to be prepared (and I was just DYING to go ahead and get some) I ordered my first CDs today!!!!!!!!!! I ordered 2 Kissaluvs size 0 because they seem to be the most highly recommended for newborns.

I figured if I've got about 34-35 weeks left of pregnancy & I buy at least 1-2 diapers each week that would put me anywhere are about 34-70 diapers total. Now, I don't think I need that many...but when I think i have enough I can go ahead and purchase things like CDs, wetbags, pail liners, fitted covers, and special laundry detergent.

I can see how this become addicting....

Random stuff from Carolina Parent

As I was leaving Monkey Joe's today the new Carolina Parents (June issue) were getting swapped out from the last month's, so I grabbed it on the way out and have looked it over. No special articles really came up in regards to pregnany, early childcare, etc. But, they do have a few "top picks" of some things that I'd thought I'd share. Oh, unless it's in quote, the information AFTER the product name is just my own opinions:o)

My Brest Friend Deluxe: Since I know someone who actually used a My Brest Friend product (possibly even this one?) I can say I've definitely seen it in action and it works.

Best Shower Gift: "Pregnancy, Childbirth & the Newborn: The Complete Guide (Medically Updated)." The ad reads, "Our testers loved this book's positive, thorough approach to preparing new parents for thei birth experience. It encourages questions, offers alternatives, and empowers parents-to-be to make decisions based on accurate, balanced research and personal choice." Sounds right up my alley!

Just for fun: "Sleep is for the Weak: The best of the mommybloggers including Amalah, Finslippy, Fussy, Woulda Shoulda Coulda, Mom-101, and more!" Basically a collection of real essays/blogs from moms that are sweet, funny, serious and filled with various viewpoints. Sounds like a must-have!

Top Pick: ERGObaby Carrier. I've always been partial to the Bjorn, but that's because I've never used an ERGO. I'll be doing PLENTY of research into carriers, believe you me!

Philips Avent DECT Monitor (SCD 520). I'm sure it works great, but we live in a small two bedroom home right now, so I don't think I'll be needing a $150 monitor.

Summit 360 by Baby Jogger. I've used jogging strollers before and I actually don't prefer them to regular strollers. I know...I'm not quite the jogger, so maybe I don't get the real experience of it, but I have gone for long walks around the lake and on other paths and they have proved more of a pain.

Top Pick: Symphony Featuring Surelatch All-in-One Carser by EvenFlo. My bff works at BRU, so I plan on checking with her thoroughly before ever putting a carseat in my vehicle. She knows far more than me. However, this one sounds decent. 5-100 lbs, read or foward facing positions and can also be used as a booster seat later. And it has SureLATCH connecters. I still think I'd like to get an infant seat but this is something I'll be doing tons of research on too.

Wonder Bumpers: Go Mama Go Designs. Expensive, but a creative twist on breathable bumpers. Kinda neat, but I probably won't get them.

So that's it. Nothing super exciting. I jsut felt the need to so something with my blog today. Hope you found that somewhat interesting.
